Many South African business owners assume their “IT guy” has everything covered. But as we discussed in our previous post on why cybersecurity is everyone’s business, security is a team sport.
Take this 60-second test to see where your business stands.
A staff member receives an email from “SARS” regarding a tax refund. What is the first thing they should do?
- A) Click the link immediately—who doesn’t want a refund?
- B) Reply to the email asking for more details.
- C) Hover their mouse over the link to check the actual URL and verify the sender’s address.
Do you use the same password for your email as you do for your banking or social media?
- A) Yes, it’s the only way I can remember them.
- B) Most of them are similar, but with different numbers at the end.
- C) No, I use a Password Manager and unique, complex passwords for every account.

If an employee’s laptop is stolen today, how much of your company data is at risk?
- A) Everything—the files are stored locally on the desktop.
- B) Some—it’s backed up once a month to an external drive.
- C) None—all data is encrypted, and we can wipe the device remotely.
When was the last time you ran a “Phishing Simulation” to see if your staff would click a malicious link?
- A) Never. I trust my team.
- B) I think we did something like that a few years ago.
- C) We do this as part of our Managed Security Services.

You receive a call from your “Bank” saying there is suspicious activity and they need your OTP to stop a payment. What do you do?
- A) Give them the OTP—they are trying to help!
- B) Ask them to verify their employee ID first.
- C) Hang up immediately and call the bank back using the official number on the back of your card.
